One of the two most ordinary roof designs, if not the most general is the hip roof. Not only

does it add architectural lines to the design of a house, but it also offers more shelter

from the constituents to walls, windows, and doors, when framed with a generous overhang. It

also lends more to the structural integrity of a home with it is rafters tying off to all four

corners and walls of the structure.

A hip roof is a little more complex to frame than a gable roof. Besides a ridge board, a

gable roof has only mutual rafters (all rafters the same length) as it is only components. The

components of a hip roof are the ridge board, mutual rafters, hip rafters, and jack rafters.

The hip roof does not always have a ridge board. If the building is a square with all four

walls being the same length, there will be no ridge and the roof will resemble a pyramid.

When cutting the common, hip and jack rafters, their lengths may be determined by using a

calculator or a rafter table book like “The Full Length Rafter Framer”. the length of the

ridge may be determined by subtracting the width of the building from it is length. For

example, if the building is 30 x 24, the ridge will be 6 feet in length. If the ridge board

is 1 1/2″ thick (which is ordinarily the case), then 1 1/2″ needs to be added to the ridge

length. This is because all mutual rafters are shortened half the thickness of the ridge or

3/4″. This allows the top of the mutual rafters to line up with the top of the ridge at each

end.

When framing a hip roof, always commence with the mutual rafters. This will place the ridge in

its proper location. This portion of the roof is framed like a gable roof, but the matching

ends there.

Start by nailing mutual rafters on one side of the ridge at each end. Now raise the ridge

and nail two rafters on the other side of the ridge opposite the original two rafters. Once

this is done, push the ridge up so the birdsmouth cuts pull in tight to the walls on each

side of the building. These rafters may now be nailed to the wall in their sameness

locations in relation to the ridge. Now nail the two mutual rafters to the center of the end

walls and to the ends of the ridge board. This will lock the ridge in it is precise location.

The rest of the mutual rafters may be nailed to the wall and ridge board.

The next elements to be installed are the four hip rafters. These are nailed on the outside

corners of the buildings walls and in the intersection made by the end and initial mutual

rafter where they meet at the ridge. With the hips and mutual rafters in place, it is easy to

see why this makes for such a strong and solid roof.

With the hip rafters in place the jack rafters may be installed. Before nailing on the firstborn

jack rafter, a string ought to be run from the plumb cut on the hip rafter to just above the

birdsmouth. This may be done by driving a nail in the center of the hip at the above brought up

locations. Tie the string to one nail, pull it tight, and secure it to the other nail. This

is to assure the hip rafter stays straight for the duration of the jack rafter installation. As the jacks

are nailed on, the string will have to be held at the center of the hip. To support keep the hip

rafter straight, the jack rafters will have to be nailed on in pairs, initial one side of the hip,

then it is mate on the other. This routine is continued all the way down the the hip rafter

till all jack rafters are installed on both sides of the hip. Remove the string and repeat

this routine on the remaining three hip rafters to finish the framing of the roof.

Collar ties and fascia boards will need to be installed before the roof may be sheathed, but

these are the basic steps to framing a hip roof.

Both Kalonji oil and seed are evenly good but kalonji oil is preffered over seeds as it is 35to 50% more potent and commodious to use

Kalonji oil is made from genuinely a remarkable herb called nigella sativa, popularly known as Black cumin or Black seed.

Kalonji is known around the world by a heap of names because of it is ancient ordinary history and medicinal value viz: black caraway, roman coriander, carvi (french), schwarzkummel (german), kalonji (Hindi/urdu), kezah(Hebrew) chernushka (Russian), corek-otu(Turkish), habbat-albarakah or habbatus-sauda (Arabic) siyah daneh (Persian) etc.

For all of history, minus the last thirty years, fat has been at the center of humane diets and cultures. When scientists theorized a link amidst completely filled fat and heart disease, industry, media, and government joined forces to label fat a greasy killer, best avoided. But according to Jennifer McLagan, not only is our fat phobia overwrought, it also hasn’t benefited us in any way. Instead it has driven us into the arms of trans fats and refined carbohydrates, and fostered punitive, dreary complex mental states toward food–that wellspring of life and pleasure.

In Fat, McLagan sets out with equivalent constituents passion, scholarship, and appetite to win us back to a healthful kinship with animal fats. She starts by defusing fat’s bad rap, both reminding us of what we already know–that fat is rudimentary to the flavor of our food–and enlightening us with the a lot of ways fat (yes, even animal fat) is important to our health.

Mostly, though, Fat is with regards to pleasures–the satisfactions of handling good ingredients skillfully, learning the cultural associations of these primal foodstuffs, recollecting and creating personal memories of beloved dishes, and pleasurable the palate and the soul with fat’s irreplaceable savor. Fat lavishes the reader with more than 100 recipes from simple to intricate, classic to contemporary, including:

Observing that even though we now know everything regarding olive oil, we may not know what to do with lard or bone marrow, McLagan offers spacious guidance on sourcing, rendering, flavoring, using, and storing animal fats, whether butter or bacon, schmaltz or suet. Stories, lore, quotations, and tips touching on fat’s place in the kitchen and in the larger culture round out this rich and unapologetic celebration of feed at it is very best.

    Pumpkin and Bacon Soup
(Makes 3 quarts/3 l)

    Ingredients

1/2 pound/225 g side (slab) bacon

1 big onion, sliced

1 stalk celery, sliced

1 huge sprig sage

hubbard squash or other firm, arid pumpkin or winter squash (about 3-1/3 pounds/1.5 kg)

8 cups/2 l water

Coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

    Directions
Remove the rind and any hard, arid skin from the bacon. Cut the bacon into 1/4-inch/6-mm dice.

Place a huge saucepan over low heat, add the bacon pieces, and cook gently so they render their fat. When most of their fat is rendered, add the onion, celery, and sage, stirring to coat with the fat. Cook until the vegetables soften slightly, with regards to 7 minutes.

Cut the squash into quarters and remove the seeds. Peel the squash and coarsely chop into smaller, even-sized pieces. Set aside.

Pour 1 cup/250 ml of the water into the pan with the vegetables, increase the heat to high and, using a wooden spoon, deglaze the pan, scraping up the browned bits on the bottom. Add the remaining 7 cups/1.75 l water, the squash pieces, 1 tablespoon of salt, and a good deal of pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, lower the heat, and simmer, covered, until the squash is very soft, 30 to 45 minutes. Remove the sage and let the soup cool slightly.

Purée the soup, in batches, in a blender and pour into a clean saucepan. Taste and adjust the seasoning, and reheat the soup to serve.

From Publishers WeeklyStarred Review. Persuasively arguing that the never-ending quest for “health” has gone too far, McLagan’s refined and tasteful and informed look at this most maligned ingredient is appropriately unctuous. A indispensable portion of our diets, fat not only provides health gains but pure pleasure: few ingredients may carry flavor the way fat does. Breaking the topic down into categories (butter, pork, poultry, beef-and-lamb), McLagan cautiously chooses recipes that showcase the role of fat in imparting and carrying flavor. Versatile butter adds richness to pastry dough, a sweet nuttiness to Brown Butter Ice Cream, thickens classic sauces and may be applied to gently poach scallops. A classic BLT gets a jolt of flavor from bacon-fat mayonnaise, and sliced Yukon Gold potatoes cooked in duck fat are practically ambrosial. While there’s a reasonable number of indulgent dishes (3-inch bone-in ribeyes served with a red wine sauce and roasted bone marrow, a pork-fat laden twist on peanut brittle), McLagan emphasizes flavor and application over decadence. Digressions like those on the history of Crisco, fat as an art medium and a thoughtful look at foie gras are welcome and enlightening. Her mixture of science, cultural anthropology and culinary imagination are intoxicating, making this a essential work on the topic.
Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. L. Rector
I am so tired of fat free everything these days in the grocery store, so it was a real pleasure to read about fat…glorious fat. Maybe my cholesterol is getting jacked to Jesus, but my food has flavor now that I am cooking with fat. I tried McLagan’s roasted chicken recipe and it was the best chicken ever…flavorful, juicy…I swoon at the memory. I look forward to trying more of the recipes from the book as soon as I can locate sources for well marbled meats, fatty fowl, and pork bellies. My in-laws are in their eighties and have cooked with lard all their lives. They are happy, healthy, thin, and the food just tastes good. I may croak a few weeks earlier than expected, but I will go out with happy taste buds. I really enjoyed reading about fat.

And while fat has gotten an unfair bad rap over the past few decades from the low-fat diet apologists, the fact is that fat consumption is an important part of living as healthy a lifestyle as you can. This is something Jennifer McLagan wanted to convey with her book to give people a greater “appreciation” for what is arguably the most flavorful ingredient you could put into a recipe (nope, not salt, not sugar, and not spices of any kind can compete with good old-fashioned FAT!).

From butter to meat fats, McLagan gives you quite a history lesson on the subject of fat (and you can’t miss the section on where the ghastly margarine came from!) to whet your appetite for some truly incredible fat-based dishes to make. Not all of them are low in carbohydrates, but they can easily be adapted to just about any diet. Except for a low-fat one. Sorry low-fatties!

I bought the book primarily for reading about fats and why they could be good for you. However, I have made several recipes including the above mentioned roast chicken, which was fabulous. I slow baked a lamb shoulder by her method of slow cooking. And I saved the fat to make some lamb fritters, (not of this book) frying them in the left over fat. I have baked sweet potatoes in lard inspired by the book. I have rendered lard for myself and my girls. It has all been quite fun. And now that I am having so much fun and the food is so good, I really am not sure I care about the health issues.

Here is one thing I will say, since I have cooked out of this book this week, I am not hungry or craving food.

Repelling cockroaches is one part of an integrated pest management solution for ridding your home of cockroach infestations. If the roaches don’t like the surroundings of your home, they are less likely to enter and nest in the basi place. If you may find roach repellents that don’t also repel all the humans you know – even better.

The following 5 roach repellents might just do the trick to make your home the last place a roach wants to live:

Pepper Spray – Roaches don’t like red pepper. So, if you spray surfaces in your kitchen and bath with a solution containing red pepper, the will refrain from those surfaces. An easy recipe to whip up a batch of spray is to mix 2 tablespoons of Tobasco Sauce (the important ingredients are red pepper and vinegar) with 1 quart of water. Pour it into a pump spray bottle and mist it onto surfaces. A word of caution, you will be misting pepper spray into the air. Until the mist settles, you are likely to sneeze more than a few times. Consider wearing a mask when you utilize the spray.

Moth Balls – Roaches, like moths, don’t like the smell of moth balls. One mutual remedy is to drop a couple moth balls behind the stove to keep the bugs from hanging out back there. One or two in the cabinet underneath the sink may be helpful as well. Moth balls are not good for humans, so don’t place them near feed or feed prep areas.

Cedar Products – The oils in cedar wood are an effective natural deterrent for a host of bugs. There are a great deal of productions available to take vantage of this fact. Look for thin cedar veneers that may be used to line drawers and cabinets, cedar balls, blocks, chips, etc to place in drawers and closets, and (of course) cedar boards and paneling to line closet walls for the uttermost protection.

Mint Oil – Mint oil is a necessary ingredient in assorted non-toxic roach sprays. The roaches keep away from it, and when coated with it, they suffocate. The sprays don’t kill as fast as typical poisons, but they are safe to use in the kitchen and around pets and children. It is possible to manufacture a spray, like the pepper spray, by diluting galore Dr. Brauner’s Peppermint Castile Soap in water and then applying with a spray bottle. I haven’t tried it, but you might be competent to fabricate your own roach spray this way if the soap concentration is high enough.

Bay Leaves – Bay leaves are another sent that roaches avoid. You may pick up a bunch of arid bay leaves in the spice division of any grocery. Place whole leaves or little sachets of crushed leaves in closets and cabinets. This is a good option for kitchen cupboards.

With the exception of moth balls, there are no hazardous chemicals in any of these roach repellents. Give them a try, in combining with baiting, sealing, and apps of diatomaceous world and boric acid to eliminate roaches from your home.

Aromatic Cedar is the answer to enviromentally friendly insect repellency. Avoid the hazards and odor related with Chemical Moth Balls and Flakes. The subtle scent of Aromatic Cedar is pleasant to most people and yet offensive to galore arthropods. Protect your clothing, family and the surroundings with the all natural repellency of Aromatic Cedar.

I would say that they would ideal for any things that you would want to keep closed in something like a sweater box. If you are looking for something that will cover a larger area, I would not recommend these unless you bought many, many sets.

When I open the closet door, I don’t smell the cedar. When I pull the sweaters out the cedar smell is there. I have not had problems with moths so far, but I never had a problem before the cedar blocks were used. Hopefully, these blocks will help keep the moths away. I have 24 blocks on one shelf.

I think it’s around $41.00 and change. But I had bought these two belts first, and went to change it and yeah, need the clutch. The trouble with putting only the belt on is that once you get the clutch out, you’ll see that it would be impossible to put a belt onto the clutch as it is one piece of plastic, and looks like one end comes apart, but looks like you will need a small ring clamp remover and a bearing puller? Im not even going there. Take a look at a new clutch online and notice that the belt is already in place. The roller brush belt is the wider of the two, 1/2″ or so, the clutch drive belt is the thin 1/4″ one. I just wish for once that there would be a note or something before you waste $15.00 on two belts, and a whole lot of time wondering. Ugg!After you get a new clutch check out you-tube on changing the clutch and belts out, there is one gal the does a bang up job showing how to remove the clutch. I would of never figured it out with out breaking something.

Wong
I purchased my filter from KillDirt and not Amazon. See my customer image for the item I was shipped, which was clearly not a genuine Bissell product.

Anyway, the product itself. Even though the description says it is the inner filter only, the one I received had both the inner and outer filter, so it was ready to go right out of the box. I removed my old filter, washed out the dust containers and put everything back together and I was ready to rock and roll. My old filters were so clogged up that there had been heavier dirt that stayed at the bottom of a U-shaped tube… Right after I turned the vacuum cleaner on, it was able to suck up all that junk that had been sitting there! Wow! My vacuum now has renewed sucking power! So glad I don’t have to replace my vacuum!

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful.
Not as sturdy as illustrated in photo
By Navid
I received the Suncast Organizer via UPS. The item had adequate packaging with Styrofoam, and was shrink wrapped, so it was secure enough to prevent most damage in transit.

It took me about 30 minutes to assemble, and the two supplied allen wrenches that came with the screws and nuts were sufficient to assemble the item.

The assembly wasn’t as easy as I had hoped. You need to line up the holes and put all the screws in, and sometimes they weren’t lining up, and that required a little bit of force to tweak and manipulate the alignment. Definitely can use two people to assemble the unit, and it would be much easier.

As I took the plastic wrapping off, and began assembling the pieces, I noticed that almost all the meshing on the panels were visibly damaged. The mesh material is very fine and delicate, and can be easily punctured and dented with little force or effort. Furthermore, the front brace was bent. I was able to straighten it out, but nevertheless, it was disappointing to see how flimsy the metal was.

A bracket, which holds the middle shelf, was also broken off, making the middle shelf unusable (like missing a a leg on a chair or table). It is made from really poor quality metal that is extremely bendable, and the brackets look like they were glued on. You figure an item that will house golf equipment would be sturdier.

The organizer was so tweaked that one of the footpads needed to be screwed half way out to keep the unit level on the floor.

Overall, I was very disappointed with the quality and workmanship of this item, especially having paid $70 for it.

Amazon.com is sending me a replacement at no charge, so hopefully when I get that one, I’ll add another review. Thank goodness for Amazon.com’s customer service.

By the way, I called them, instead of doing the return/exchange online. They also emailed me a free shipping label.

The one that will be returned can be used as scrap metal.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful.
Suncast GO3216 Golf Organizer
By GaS Ginsters
The Suncast G03216 Golf Organizer is overall quite good. It has several good features including it’s all metal frame which is sturdy, and handles indoor humidity with ease (mine is stored in the basement where it’s cooler and a bit more humid than the rest of the house). The adjustable foot rests allow for compensating uneven surfaces if required. The open top allows for some versatility in storing different bag heights, and the lip-bar at the bottom ensures that the bags will not slide off the rack floor. It does not provide an area to stow a pullcart if you have one; however, not many golf organizers do. The organizer is much easier to assemble with two people; however, if going it alone, read all the instructions first and hash out a gameplan.

I only have to beefs with this organizer:
(1) The bag storage area is not quite big enough to hold two professional size bags. Just a few inches in both width and depth would have made this unit much more versitile in accommodating golf bags of all levels.
(2) The organizer did not come with the front skirt as shown in the picture on the box. This piece covers the gap between the floor and the base of the unit. I had called the 800 number and was informed that the unit does not come with it. All the pictures still display this piece. Although I was assured that the skirt does not affect the structure of the organizer, I think it would provide greater reinforecement of the side walls, and besides, it’s aesthetically pleasing…

I picked mine up on sale for $[...] at Target, and for the price, it’s a very good buy. The design is not the best for weight distribution as both bags are stored side by side. If you are a golfer which has a couple of those professional size gofl bags, you will probably want to spend the extra money and invest in an organizer which has the storage shelves in the middle and the golf bags on either side. This will allow for more even weight distribution in the areas where the organizer is the strongest. golfoutletsusa.com is currently selling one for $[...].

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful.
Awesome buy, final product, and service, with one concern
By Brandon F. Williams
The shipping notification was the fastest I’ve ever seen on Amazon. I received a shipping email confirmation in less than 2 hours with this product and recieved it just as fast.

Granted as the rest of the reviews have stated the organizer is better to put together with 2 people. The directions are easy to understand and decently well written to say the least. I got the organizer put together in atleast 45 Minutes. The base and back were the biggest pain, because you had to line up the holes and you can’t lay them flat because the side panels cause a space and the base mesh gets in the way. Still it’s an easy item to put together.

My main concern was the Mesh and the Metal quality, there was a really small part of the mesh that was damaged on the base but it wasn’t a problem and not even noticeable, so I can’t complain about it really seeing as how it didn’t affect the organizer, it’s structural integrity, and it didn’t look broken or shaby when trying to look for it. Like I said it wasn’t even noticeable. The metal needed to be moved around alittle to get it to fit right, but again nothing was damaged, unbalanced, or affected by it. My concern was that the mesh and metal should be of better quality / stronger.

After all is said and done and put together the organizer was sturdy and fit solid. When I stepped back and looked at the final product with all of my golf equipment on it, it looks really professional and clean. So I would deffinatly suggest this product for the price, product, and look.

The organizer fits my bag, bag stand attachment, and whelled caddy cart with ease. The top shelf is great if you have a large supply of golf balls. The rest of the shelves are great if you have Golf Shoes and other items.

Like I said it’s a great product and it makes everything look professionaal and clean.

Perfect for ours but consider these points
By K. Corn
Before purchasing this, consider your needs. If you are a professional cook who uses more than 27 full size bottles of spices frequently, you may need more spice storage space. Yes, it does hold as many as 54 half-size spice containers but they can run out quickly, depending how often you cook, the amount of spices you use, etc.

Also keep these points in mind:

1. Your budget. Although most of our spices are in this spice stack, we do buy larger amounts at wholesale centers. However, you can get around this issue by simply putting some of the bulk spices in smaller containers which fit in the spice stack.

2. The size of bottle or brand of spice you buy. This is NOT made for square spice containers. If you are wedded to a particular brand in a square container, you’ll have to find additional storage space for those spices.

3. Although it says the drawers are color coded, we did not find this to be true. Also, it is plastic and the drawers are noted to (possibly) tip over if you pull out more than one drawer at a time. So you need to be aware about that and take care.

Major pluses of this product:

It really does make spices easier to find and use. Pull out the drawers, see the spices arranged in alphabetical order and you’re set to go!

The last three spaces in each tier accommodate larger spice containers but NOT super sized ones – just larger ones.

All in all, I’m very HAPPY with this item!

Execution could be better.
By Matthew Stack
This is by far the most useful spice organizer I have found. It works well. However, it could be improved by using stronger materials. It is rather flimsy for a $40 item. Also, the drawers could be just a bit taller. Some of my larger spice bottles hit the drawer above and I have to hold one closed while opening the other. So, it is not 100% trouble free. But, it does allow for the best use of space for its intended purpose. The labels that come with it are pretty much useless. They are printed on plain white copy paper with an adhesive side. If used, they will become filthy in no time at all just from handling. I am pleased with the improved organization and use of space. But, I am afraid it will break every time I use it. The pegs that each shelf slides on and which hold all of the weight of the drawer contents when open are very small and made of brittle plastic. So, as other reviews have stated, it is a good idea to support the drawer with one hand while removing the desired spice with the other. If this product were made of stronger materials and included washable labels, it would be PERFECT.

When I received it I was surprised to see that it was shorter and flimsier, so it is either made by a different company, or the company that makes it is has changed its quality. The worst part was that according to the product description, the upper compartment is 5 1/2 inches tall, but it is actually about 5 3/8, so the 5 1/2 in tall jars wouldn’t fit, and since the unit is also shorter, the drawers wouldn’t close if the bottles were larger than 1 5/8 inches in diameter. I ended up buying two of the smaller units and am really happy with my newly organized spice cabinet. Fortunately, Amazon has a great return policy and was very accommodating.
